  • Extracting notations of a musical piece

Not very experienced at this but just trying to put my process out here so one can try to make use of it. I’ve realised the process is complex, difficult and often frustrating that we tend to give up on it.

I think of this exercise as being able to estimate distance between two points. Similarly, the better one gets as estimating the distances between notes, the better one gets at this exercise.

The reference is always Sa (Sadaj). From there I try to practice singing Pa, Ma, Ga, Ni, Re, Dha (increasing order of difficulty for me). Once I feel comfortable, I practice singing the komal swars. The more you sing the better the ability to estimate the distance between two notes.

So my exercise is something like singing:

    Sa-Pa

    Sa-Ma

    Sa-Ga

    Sa-Ni

    Sa-Re

    Sa-Dha

In other variations you can replace Sa with any other note of your choice eg. Re-Dha etc.

Initially the process is slow and can be discouraging. A keyboard or harmonium helps. It also helps to keep a map of the scale in mind with respect to distances between notes: for example Ga-Ma and Ni-Sa have a half-note gap.

After this exercise, you can take a small musical phrase, practice extracting notation and confirm with a harmonium / piano.

It takes quite some patience, mind-work and listening to get reasonably good at it. Hope this helps someone.
