How to achieve evenness between different notes
I’ve been listening to Madhuvanti from Ashwin’s album Roots. It is achingly lovely and deeply dives into what drew me to the bansuri (its rich tonal beauty).
Anyway, one thing that strikes me is the many note sequences (sorry I am not yet fluent with Indian classical music terminology) going between and amongst tivra ma, komal ga and re. When I play these notes they are jarringly different from each other in timbre – re tends to be clear but quiet and weak, komal ga breathy and indistinct, and tivra ma almost too loud and hollow (by contrast with the others). Ashwin almost makes them even but still with their own distinct character, almost as each note grows out of the core of the one before.
Well, having played for just under 4 months fairly casually, I hardly expect to sound like this. And even before asking, I do know the answer about how to get there is going to be ‘practise!’. But, still, I’m interested in any comments about how to strengthen the weak sounding notes. I’m currently leaning heavily into playing long notes in my practise sessions. I’ve played other instruments – notably the guitar for some decades – and what is most fresh and new to me about bansuri is the way you have to develop an individual relationship with every note.
